Bourbon and Rye
The primary difference bettween whiskey and rye is the type of grain used during fermentation. For bourbon, it's corn. For Rye it's rye grain.
Bourbon
A specific type of American whiskey that is made from at least 51% corn and aged in oak barrels. It tends to be sweeter and more mellow than rye or whiskey. More than 95% of the bourbon produced is made in Kentucky.
Rye
A type of whiskey made with a majority of the grain rye. This term refers to either American rye whiskey, made of at least 51% rye mash, or Canadian whisky, which may or may not contain rye. Canadian regulations don’t require it to contain rye, though historically it did.

Distinctive spice from the rye grains balanced with the sweetness from the corn. The palate offers hints of chocolate with a lingering finish of soft smoke. 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley are the components of the mash bill.

Bourbon and Rye Cocktail Recipes
Paper Plane
- 1.5 oz Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
- 1 oz campari
- ¾ oz Amaro Nonino
- 1 oz lemon juice
- 0.5 oz demerara simple
- 2 dashes of angostura bitters
Instructions
- Add New Riff Bourbon, Aperol, Amaro Nonino Quintessential, and lemon juice to a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Shake until chilled but not overshaken
- Strain into a cool cocktail glass

Dirty Shirley
- 2 oz PiggyBack 100% Rye
- 1 oz Grenadine
- 8 oz Lemon-Lime Soda
- Maraschino Cherries for garnish
Instructions
- Fill a highball glass with ice.
- Add PiggyBack 100% Rye and grenadine to the glass.
- Top with soda.
- Garnish with maraschino cherries.
